Sherry's Caffe and Bakery (Formerly Nostalgia House)
If you have been keeping up with any number of Port Orchard Facebook pages, you will know that there has been some shake ups with Nostalgia House Bakery.
Sherry's Way is Made With Love
The construction of the round about downtown, between the 76 station and KFC, in Port Orchard, negatively affected businesses all along the Bay Street corridor. It took a VERY long time, and completely tanked the retail traffic that went through that route. During this time Lois began looking for a new, smaller place to call home for her bakery. She shopped around and Towne Square and up at the Subway space, but moving costs were prohibitive.
During that same time, Sherry was looking for a place to call home, back here in Port Orchard. She had opened two locations in Bremerton, that did very well, but she was ready to come home, and signed a lease in the space to be vacated by Nostalgia House.
Taking a look back, it is no wonder these two, powerhouse women, came together, to love on their community and share their love of feeding people. Sherry began her journey, years ago at the Wildcat Lake Grocery. She began spreading her wings, creating food that was ready, fresh and amazing, in a deli kitchen. Over the years, she worked at PJ's market, the current 76 station, downtown, the Chevron across from Fred Meyer, and the Mullinex Market. The owner at Chevron was not going to hire her. But she promised him a 75% increase in profits, and she more than hit her mark. Selling her breakfast burritos out the back door, 2 for $5, people were immediately impressed with her abilities! She began adding other items to her menu, and people stopped in, just to get their hands on her food.
Once she left Chevron, she was hired at the Mullinex Market. Since it was a corporate store, they wanted their own items. The owner took Sherry to a meeting, and had the uppers come to her store, and they made concessions for that store, because her food is quite tasty! Her daughter, soon to be mother in law and other family still work in that location, spreading more of Sherry's goodness with the community!
After all that, she took a few months off for surgery and recovery, she was back at it again, building a whole new client base in Bremerton. She is excstatic to be back in Port Orchard, where her roots are, and are WE glad to have her back on this side!
Lois, owner of Nostalgia House Bakery has a similiar story. She started decorating cakes more than 50 years ago, and had been in the baking industry 43 years. She has done everything from sugar and chocolate sculpting to donuts, cake decorating, pastries, you name it, she's done it. She opened Nostalgia House Bakery in 2012, in a buidling behind the Red Dog Saloon. She moved to downtown Port Orchard in 2014. But it all started, way before that. Lois' mother passed away when she was six, so she learned to cook and clean early in life, to help her father. Lois' mom always wanted a bakery, and Lois' carried that torch.
In 1971, Lois participated in a Cake Walk at Central Kitsap Jr. High School. Her cake sold for $18, and it 1971, THAT was a good deal of money, for a cake! After this, she was hooked! She went on to be the Executive Pastry Chef for the Washington State Convention Center. It here, that she was able to travel, and learn from some of the top chefs in the industry, at the time.
Nostalgia House Bakery started in 1983-84, in Lois' home. They were able to do catering for many local businesses, bingo halls and special events. Owning a brick and mortar shop remained a dream.
These two women both had mothers who dreamed. The carried the torch of their mother's dreams with them. Sherry's mother's picture will hang in her cafe, and Lois' has a special shadow box ther her husband made for her, reminding her of her dreams. With two, second generation dreamers, NOTHING can stand in their way!
Sherry's Caffee and Bakery is open from 4am-4pm. She is just down from the gas station, right in downtown! Since they don't offer deli items, you can grab your gas, and pop into Sherry's and get your daily fix for homemade burritos! They are currently open for their 'soft opening', and will be having their grand opening celebration on April 12! When you run down to opening day for the Farmer's Market, don't forget to pop in and see all the amazing things happening at Sherry's! They will soon be showcasing a full lunch menu, as well as all the old favorites!
Port Orchard is an amazing town, full of small businesses that give us that home town vibe! The only way to keep it that way is to Shop Local, and keep our dollars here! Join me in welcoming this powerful team of women to our business community!
